A Scottish Gem in James Braid’s Course Design Crown

Stunning Scenery & Quirky Features

150 Years of Glorious Golf

In the mists of time ancient glaciers carved a great flat plain across what is now the area around the village of Muir of Ord in Easter Ross, in the Scottish Highlands, just 11 miles from Inverness.

Where once there was an expanse of gravel and sand, there is now an impressive 18-hole golf course, greens set among heathland and moorland, red kites soaring above the fairways, with clear views of Ben Wyvis to the north and Beauly Firth to the south.

The story of the Muir of Ord Golf Club is intrinsically woven into the area’s history, the golf course itself a part of the local landscape – as sought out now by enthusiastic golfers as it was when it’s first nine holes were planned out back in 1875, and subsequently lengthened into a full 18-holes by legendary golf course architect James Braid, in the 1920s.

Visitors Warmly Welcomed

Playing a round (or preferably more) at “The Muir” is an experience no committed golfer should miss, especially if you’re a golf tourist following in the footsteps of professional golf course designer James Braid on the James Braid Highland Golf Trail, or heading to explore the spectacular North Coast 500 road route.

We are always ready to warmly welcome visitors to Muir of Ord Golf Club – the experienced, hospitable management team and friendly members being delighted and proud to show off our course and clubhouse.

You can book a tee-off time in advance online, and enjoy all our clubhouse facilities which include a bar, restaurant, small golf shop and golf clubs and buggies to hire.

You’ll find some surprises when you take to the course – like the fact that the Inverness to Wick railway line dissects the course, and that hole number 12 is perhaps the toughest par 3 to be found in the north of Scotland with woodland on the left, thick heather on the right, a greenside bunker and a dry ditch running at an angle across the fairway.

Come and find out why Muir of Ord was declared Scottish Golf Club of the Year for 2016 – we won’t disappoint.

The Legacy of James Braid

The Muir of Ord Golf club is special in that it started life with only nine holes, but the members managed to raise enough funds to extend it – and invited the famous Scottish born James Braid to design the new nine, which were ready for play in 1927.

Braid was one of the leading golfers of his generation, winning the prestigious Open Championship five times. His legacy lives on in the hundreds of magnificent golf courses he designed across the British Isles (and one in the USA) – including Muir of Ord, which he declared had a “fine situation”.

We’re members of the Association of James Braid Courses, which means that members of other Braid golf clubs get preferential green fees when booking in advance to play here at Muir of Ord.

Playable and enjoyable for golfers of all ages and stages, Muir of Ord is open to everyone who loves the game of golf, whether you actually play yourself or not.
